The iconic United Kingdom cult sludge/doom metal unit Iron Monkey has revealed details of their first new full-length in almost two decades. The group has reformed for a second wave of sonic savagery via a new album, ‘9-13‘.
It was recorded in their hometown of Nottingham in Spring 2017, with producer Johnny A. Carter and the album will be released October 20th through Relapse Records.
Iron Monkey was originally one of the most punishing acts to rise from the United Kingdom in the Nineties. The original members, J.P. Morrow, J. Rushby, S. Watson, D. Dalziel, and J. Greaves were influenced by the likes of Eyehategod, Buzzov*en, Floor, Grief, and various hardcore, punk, and sludge metal bands.
After a few well-received, highly revered releases, Iron Monkey disbanded in 1999. Then original singer J.P. Morrow sadly passed away from a heart attack in 2002. Fast forward to late 2016, when the band surprised fans with the announcement that they were reforming.
Now as a trio, with co-founding members S. Watson on bass and J. Rushby on guitar and vocals, they’re joined by new member S. Briggs (CHAOS U.K.,) on drums. Briggs also played with original Iron Monkey vocalist J.P. Morrow in the short-lived sludge supergroup My War.
The band commented on the reformation and new material:
“We’re older, more cynical, more isolationist. Musically, we’re more aggressive, more focused — a direct assault. We intend to take what is rightfully ours, usurp the scene, then crush its skull.“
‘9-13’ is set for release on October 20th on CD, LP, and digital formats via Relapse Records. Physical packages and digital orders are available via Relapse.com and all other retail outlets.
